Our approach

With its new focus on climate action the Kühne Foundation will help decouple growth in prosperity from greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the transition to a just, low carbon economy - particularly in low- and middle-income countries. 

The new climate center, which became operational in 2023, works in accordance with the established principles of the Kühne Foundation; operational, entrepreneurial, applied, and international. 

Recognizing that transport and logistics are still highly dependent on fossil fuels the center will start by working on low carbon transport and logistics as well as  low carbon development in Africa. Our activities will develop over time to address climate mitigation, adaptation and sequestration more broadly.

By accelerating the transition to a low carbon economy, the center will contribute to the identification and deployment of new solutions, the creation of new low carbon jobs and sustainable development in low- and middle-income countries.

By 2025, the center should be an established and respected part of the global climate philanthropic community working globally on climate compatible trade and sustainable, low carbon development.
